What should I expect as a FIRST mentor?

We expect that you’ll find the mentor role rewarding and a valuable piece of your life. Mentors have the opportunity to influence youth, be exposed to new perspectives from young minds, network with other professionals, and develop and improve technical skills.

What is expected of a FIRST mentor?

​Mentors are expected to act as role models. They are to optimize the learning experience, promote independent thought, promote safe practices, and facilitate the experiential learning process. FIRST mentors commit their time and experience, and both technical and non-technical mentors provide value to their teams. The time required to truly be an effective FIRST mentor varies throughout the year, for instance, the most intense part of the FRC program occurs from early January (the beginning of the build season) to mid-February (robot ship date) when teams are constructing and testing their robot. March may also be demanding on an FRC mentor, as teams are traveling to Regional events to compete.
